Direct action support

Activism, Climate Justice and Environmentalism By April 21, 2016 Tags: , , , , No Comments

A while back I talked about the importance of activism to making a difference for climate justice, and I promised I would address the topic of how to engage in activism if marching on the streets holding signs isn’t your thing. Today seems like a good day to tackle that subject. There are lots of options, but the one I want to look at most closely is direct action support.

Start a revolt against AllOrNothingism

Activism, Climate Justice and Environmentalism By January 25, 2016 Tags: , , , , , , 3 Comments

AllOrNothingism is a plague on social progress and should be revolted against.

There is a problem in our culture. I have noticed it more times than I can count over the course of my adult life, and I despise it. It’s something I’ve come to refer to as AllOrNothingism. Its the idea that if an action you are taking won’t do much, it is never worth doing. If you can’t do something all the way, then you shouldn’t bother doing it at all. I want to call bullshit on this idea right away.

Rocking Homestead year in review – 2015

Activism, Community, Family Life By December 31, 2015 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , No Comments

This year has been a big year for everyone here on the Rocking Homestead. There have been some ups and downs, mostly ups, and some big, life altering moments and decisions.

The biggest things that happened this year was most likely the birth of my surro baby, Kennan, the fact that I’ve completed most of my degree program, and we made the decision to remain living in this house, possibly forever.

Activism vs. Personal Action: The most important thing you can do to combat climate change

Activism, Climate Justice and Environmentalism, Social Justice By December 14, 2015 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , 2 Comments

I have been thinking about the best way to write this for months, there are probably a good 5 half finished blog posts dedicated to this subject in my drafts folder.  I’ve decided not to get flowery or mince words.  I’m about to make the case that activism is the most important thing you can do to fight climate change, and that personal action is good, but just not enough.

How to make friends outside of school

This is what socializing via Facebook is like.

There is a common complaint amongst 20 and 30 something moms in my circles. “How do I make friends?” They ask. “How do you meet and connect with people now that we’re no longer in high school / college?” Many of us (and probably not just moms) feel a lack of connection, companionship, and intimacy in our lives. The online interest groups we join to discuss our hobbies are a poor replacement for actual community with real, human interaction. We know this, and yet we feel utterly ignorant to what we can do about it. We have no idea how to meet and interact with real people in real life. I have a few ideas though.

New Years Resolutions

I do not like New Years. I don’t mind it changing from one year to another but I’m just not in to how it’s celebrated. It’s not my thing. I don’t totally get it, because time and dates are really kind of arbitrary, it seems to me like its some kind of Christmas after party if you weren’t satisfied with Christmas festivities. Whatever. I don’t do staying up late, that’s not my thing. And all the drunk people? Annoying. But the thing I hate most of all is resolutions.

People’s Climate March

The People's Climate rally at the Capitol!

The People’s Climate rally at the Capitol!

As many of you know, today hundreds of thousands of people across the world (over 300,000 in New York City alone) gathered to demand action on climate change.  It was a huge moment in history, and will be a serious turning point for climate conversations in the future.  Here in Denver, nothing was planned.  So I planned something.

People’s Climate March

Activism, Climate Justice and Environmentalism, Community, Current Events By September 8, 2014 Tags: , , , , , , , , , No Comments

I’m sure everyone has heard of the People’s Climate March taking place in New York City September 21st, and for a brief moment in time, I thought I would be able to attend it.  That would have been a dream come true for me, but unfortunately, due to some medical appointments I have to keep having to do with the surrogacy, I am unable to attend.
