The annoying classism of tidying up – KonMari minimalism vs. environmental anticonsumerism

The first time I heard of The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up and the KonMari method of housekeeping, I was intrigued. I am, after all, a wreck when it comes to keeping house, if there was some new house keeping innovation, I wanted to hear about it. People were gushing about this book. Calling it life changing, revolutionary, even spiritual. That’s one hell of a cleaning book! People described to me its revolutionary message to the world, “Keep nothing that doesn’t bring you joy!” They’d say, half a gasp, half reverence.

And I’d be left blinking. That’s it?

Recently an advice column has been making the rounds on social media, in which a person asks for advice on what to do about poor kids coming into your neighborhood to trick or treat. The writer was pretty harshly criticized, and given how they talked about how their street isn’t that rich, they’re just doctors and lawyers and business owners, I’d say justifiably so. But it did make me think about some stuff.

First things first – Starting this homesteading blog journey

Feminism, Gardening, Social Justice By October 13, 2013 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , 2 Comments

I’d like to get a few things out of the way as I start this blog. I am not doing this to paint a portrait of my perfect family. We are not perfect, not as a family, nor as individuals (although in my somewhat biased opinion, Jeremy comes pretty close). I read a lot of homesteading and natural living blogs that do a pretty good job of painting a perfect picture, and a lot of criticisms of those blogs for doing so. I’m sure those families and bloggers lives are not as picturesque as they seem. Everyone puts their best foot forward when in the public eye. But it is not my intention to do that.
