Back from Europe!

Gardening, Random Fun Stuff By June 19, 2016 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , 1 Comment

Note: I wrote this post a week ago, but failed to post it. I think I’m getting the hang of a schedule here and will be back to posting regularly soon!

Hello everyone! First off, I want to apologize for not having any posts while we were gone. I had every intention of scheduling a series of posts to go up while we were gone, but I just never got around to it. Can you all forgive me? I hope so, because I have a ton of awesome homesteading and environmental stuff to talk about having to do with this trip!

Official Polyculture Lawn Plans

Climate Justice and Environmentalism, Gardening By March 14, 2016 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , 4 Comments
Apparently this polyculture lawn is from a park in Missoula Montana. It looks pretty awesome, doesn't it? Hoping for a similar effect in mine! Image obtained here.

I discussed the concept of polyculture lawns earlier, but here are my actual plans for my lawn. Some of this stuff might not work out in the long run, but there’s only one real way to find out, so I’m giving it a try. To recap, my goals are increased carbon sequestration and improvement of biodiversity through cultivating a multi species lawn.

Why you should get an irrigation audit

Gardening By March 7, 2016 Tags: , , , , , , , 1 Comment

Recently I went to several hardware stores near my home looking for something I thought was pretty simple, a set of irrigation audit cups. I looked in the irrigation sections and they were no where to be found. I looked in the home and garden sections and they were nowhere to be found. Finally, at one big box hardware store that shall go un-named (cough, cough, unless I out them in a meme), I decided to ask. Everyone I asked seemed to have no idea what I was even talking about. I felt like Ron Swanson.

Why you should get an irrigation audit

This was totally me.

Fall prep

Obviously summer is over in the northern hemisphere, where I live, so I am currently engaged in preparing my garden for winter. This used to be a much less involved task, but now that I’m a year into my horticulture program I know a lot of stuff I didn’t previously. Here’s what I’m doing to get everything ready for winter.

This years lessons, plans, and things to think about

We had some major successes and major failures this year, and since I didn’t chronicle them in real time (I guess that counts as one of our failures) I’m going to list them all here. We also have some very specific plans coming up for the winter and next year you can expect to hear more about. Finally, there are some general ideas we’re tossing around that we still need to settle on and decide a timeline for.
